Truagh made a winning start to the Monaghan senior football championship beating Carrickmacross 0-10 to 0-7 on home soil.
The sides traded four points each during the opening half hour before scores from Christopher McKenna and Gary Mohan saw Truagh lead 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time.
Carrickmacross’ forward Cian Conlon restored parity nine minutes into the second half before points from McKenna, Mohan, Adam Treanor and Pauric Treanor made it a four-point game two minutes into injury time.
Conlon replied with a pointed free right at the death but it was too late as Carrickmacross came up short in the end.
Meanwhile in Cavan, Laragh United scored a 13-point win over Butlersbridge at the Athletic Grounds winning 3-17 to 0-13 at the Athletic Grounds.
Laragh led 1-5 to 0-5 on 21 minutes; Jack McKenna’s goal on five minutes separated the sides while Caoimhin O’Reilly slotted over four points for Butlersbridge.
Three minutes later, Niall Fitzpatrick registered Laragh’ second goal which helped them to a five-point lead at the break; 2-8 to 0-9.
Laragh doubled the margin on 48 minutes and three minutes later McKenna added his second goal as Darren Greenan’s men ran out convincing winners.
