Leona Maguire endured a difficult opening round at the women’s golf tournament at the Olympics.
The Cavan native opened with a round of 78 leaving her on six over par and 13 shots off the lead.
The front nine holes proved to be the most challenging part for Maguire. She carded a double bogey on the first hole and a treble bogey on the ninth.
Maguire improved slightly on the back nine with birdies on the 12th, 16th and 18th holes but she still faces an uphill task.
Stephanie Meadow also finished the day on six over par. The pair are 13 shots adrift behind the clubhouse leader.
Celine Boutier from France tops the leaderboard on seven under leaving her three shots clear of South Africa’s Ashleigh Buhai.
