Rory Beggan was calmness personified, playing down his own role as Scotstown claimed the Monaghan senior championship.
Began helped his Scotstown team mates to an eighth county title in 11 years. The goalkeeper converting a free and a 45 in the 17 points to 14 win over Inniskeen.
While it was a 27th title for Scotstown, the wait extends to 76-years for Inniskeen. However, Beggan has been impressed with Inniskeen, admitting they are a tough nut.
“100%” there a tough challenge, explained Beggan. “I’ve been very impressed with them, they’ve been very impressive the last number of years. They’ve jusrt been unlucky in semi-finals”.
“They’ll be back” declared Beggan, “it could be this stage again and another final”.
While it was an eighth county title for Beggan, the Monaghan goalie revealed it’s a feeling he loves.
“It’s sweeter every year, especially the year after your lose one and you didn’t perform” explained Beggan. “I thought we were building throughout the whole year”.
“A few of the boys there are saying, it’s one of the sweeter ones” smiled Beggan.
Forwards win the day
With Beggan doing his bit in goal, the keeper admitted the forward line played a major part in the victory. Jack McCarron scoring six points, including three marks and one free.
“We’ve the ability up there” Beggan declared. “Jack showed today the class he had. Conor McCarthy, Mattie Maguire them boys been ticking away all years and didn’t shy away from the big scores today”.
“I’ve been scoring frees for at least 10-years. I don’t try to let any county final or big stage get to me. There simple frees if you just go back to what you do when you practice”.
“We have full faith in our forwards. Even some of the defenders got up there to get on the scoreboard”.
Scotstown will face either Derrygonelly Harps or the Derry champions in the Ulster quarter-final.
