World rugby have sanctioned “smart ball technology” for next month’s World Ruby Under-20 championship
The technology will identify forward passes and indicate legitimate tries at the competition in South Africa next month.
While the TMO will in-form the officials if a kick has found touch, or if a pass has gone forward. The TMO will use the technology to inform the referee.
While, officials will be informed by the TMO if a kick has found touch or not. Lineouts will also be monitored as the technology can detect if a throw isn’t straight.
Developed by Sportable and Gilbert, the ball is tracked in 3D and real-time with beacons positioned around the pitch.
Beacons can determine the exact position of the ball up to 20 times per second allowing for immediate feedback on every kick, pass and throw.
