Rhasidat Adeleke finished fourth in the women’s 400-metres final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
The 20-year-old posted a time of 50.13 seconds and was approximately half a second away from a bronze medal.
Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic won gold in a time of 48.76 seconds. Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek claimed silver while the bronze medal went to Sada Williams of Barbados.
Elsewhere, Sarah Lavin broke Derval O’Rourke’s 13-year-old national record as she finished fifth in the 100-metre hurdles semi-final.
The Limerick native clocked 12.62 seconds, shaving 0.03 seconds off O’Rourke’s previous benchmark. It wasn’t enough to make the final however.
And Cork’s Louise Shanahan missed out on an 800-metres semi-final place. Her time of 2:00.66 saw her finish fifth in the heat and wasn’t enough to progress.
