Monaghan remain second from bottom of Allianz league division 3A following a 2-23 to 1-20 defeat to Sligo at Markievicz Park.
The hosts led 1-4 to four points on 14 minutes with Eddie O’Donoghue’s 13th minute goal separating the sides. Leo Maloney (two), Pauric Malone and Conor Gernon on target for Monaghan.
The sides traded six points each during the remainder of the half as Sligo led 1-10 to 0-10 at half-time.
Tomas Cawley’s goal saw Sligo move seven points clear 14 minutes into the second-half. Monaghan’s Leo Moloney replied with a goal 60 seconds later resulting in a four-point game.
Donall Hanley gave Sligo a nine-point lead heading into injury time before Monaghan responded with three unanswered points.
Leo Moloney (two) and Declan Hughes were on target but the farney men still fell short. Monaghan are fifth in Allianz league division 3A with one round of games remaining.
Arthur Hughes side sit on two points, one clear of bottom side Armagh, but behind Louth on score difference. Monaghan travel to Cavan next week with Cavan currently on four points.
