Monaghan’s hopes of survival in Allianz football league division one were dealt a major blow after losing 2-15 to 0-13 to Tyrone at Clones.
The hosts trailed 2-5 to 0-8 but played most of the second half with 13 men and suffered a heavy defeat in the end.
The sides traded three points each inside the opening ten minutes. 60 seconds later Peter Harte’s penalty goal gave Tyrone a three-point cushion.
Cormac Quinn’s goal on 26 minutes pushed Tyrone five points clear; Monaghan followed up with three of the next four scores.
Shane Carey slotted over two scores while Micheal Bannigan added another. Tyrone’s Darragh Canavan replied in stoppage time making it a three-point game at the break.
Jack McCarron was sent off within a minute of the restart. The Monaghan forward dismissed after receiving both a black and yellow card.
Canavan opened up a six-point gap on 45 minutes; 60 seconds later the hosts’ problems were compounded when Killian Lavelle received a straight red card.
Conor McManus was introduced off the bench and the multiple All-Star winner reduced the margin to four points on 51 minutes.
Tyrone dominated the remainder of the contest; the visitors won comfortably after hitting seven of the last ten scores
