The Monaghan minor footballers reached the Ulster final after beating Tyrone on penalties at Roslea.
A shootout was needed after it ended 4-13 to 2-19 after extra-time. Monaghan won the shootout 6-5.
Monaghan made a blistering start. Goals from Matthew Finn and Luke McKenna saw the Farney men lead 2-3 to 1-2 on ten minutes.
60 seconds later, Tyrone’s Liam found the net. The Red Hand County landed seven of the next ten scores and led 2-9 to 2-6 at half-time.
However, Leo Hughes registered Tyrone’s third goal 15 minutes into the second-half. 13 minutes later Tommy Mallen restored parity.
The sides subsequently traded a point each making it 3-10 to 2-13 at full-time. Suddenly extra-time was upon us.
Liam Corry’s goal four minutes into extra time saw Tyrone move three points clear. Two more points saw them lead by two points halfway through extra time.
Whereas, Monaghan responded with five unanswered points; Max McGinnity with the equalising point deep into injury time.
What followed was a dramatic penalty shootout. Matthew Carolan, Sean Og McElwain (two each), Max McGinnitty, Conor Jones on target for Monaghan.
The farney men will now meet Derry in the Ulster minor final. Derry beat Donegal 0-9 to 0-4 in the other semi-final.
