The Monaghan minor team bowed out of the ulster minor football championship after a two point defeat to Donegal on Wednesday night.
Luke McGlynn’s 16th minute penalty was the difference as Donegal scored a 1-9 to 10 point victory in Clones as Donegal progress to the ulster semi-final.
Donegal had led three points to nil before the penalty. Points from Paddy McElwee and Niall Rice making it three points to two in Donegal’s favour.
Stephen Mooney made it a three point game on 20 minutes. Donegal were reduced to 14 after Ethan Friel was sent-off for a second bookable offence.
Monaghan reacted with Conor Reid and Niall Rice both scored points as Donegal led 1-4 to five points at half-time.
Two Stephen Mooney points two minutes into the second half made saw Monaghan lead eight points to 1-4. However the farney men only managed two further points in the game.
Luke McGlynn, Conor Reid, Michael Callaghan (0-2) and Gary Kelly all scored points for Donegal. A Stephen Mooney mark and free was all Monaghan could muster against the 14 men.
Donegal won out 1-9 to 10 points and setup a semi-final meeting with Armagh.
