Monaghan Harps will return to senior football following a 1-16 to 2-10 win over Cremartin in the McElvaney Waste and Recycling Sponsored Monaghan Senior Football Championship Final.
The sides were tied at 1-7 to ten points at the interval before a 50th minute goal by Monaghan Harps proved to be the turning point.
The game was an enthralling contest right from the outset where Ryan McVicar scored the game’s first goal inside the first minute giving Cremartin a three-point cushion.
Harps responded well drawing level before the first water before both teams tagged on four points each prior to the interval.
The Monaghan town side were first off the mark in the second period as Eimhin Morahan slotted over the first point of the half after 33 seconds.
The next quarter was evenly contested with no more than a point separating the teams at any stage during the third quarter.
Almost five minutes after the restart Neil McAdam found the net opening up a three-point lead in Harps’ favour.
Matthew Lambe’s side didn’t score for nearly 23 minutes in the second half and a goal from Shane Burke in the third minute of injury time ended the barren spell.
The goal made little difference however, as Harps held on for a three-point victory and a first title at this level since 2009.
