McEvoys Cavan Eagles are Women’s Division One National Cup champions.
The Cavan club, saw-off iSecure Swords Thunder 86-68 in the final at the National Basketball Arena this afternoon.
Eagles led 21–13 after the first quarter. Lanetta Williams putting seven of her overall 28 on the board in the quarter.
A Rahema Henderson three-pointer extended Eagles lead to 26–17. However, Thunder fought back reducing the lead back to four points at 31–27.
Thunder made it a four point game, 31–27 midway through the second-quarter. Eagles held a 13-point lead at half-time, leading 47–34.
Niamh Tolan’s layup had the Cavan side 53-41 ahead four minutes into the third-quarter. However, Thunder kept in touch, 59-51 with two minutes remaining in the quarter.
Indeed, Eagles held an 11 point lead at three quarter time, 64-53.
Jasmine Walker two-point jump shot got Thunder off on the front foot in the final quarter. This was quickly followed by a Niamh Tolan three pointer, moving Cavan Eagles 69-55 ahead.
Indeed a Ciara Tolan three pointer in the closing stages, helped the Cavan side secure the title.
The final score 86-68 in favour of McEvoys Cavan Eagles, adding their club to the roll of honour for the Women’s Division One National Cup for the very first time.
