Corduff boss Seamus McEnaney praised his players after a maiden Monaghan SFC point on their debut.
Reigning Monaghan champions Ballybay Pearse Brothers were held to a 2-8 to 14 point draw. A day where the intermediate champions hosted their first game.
“It was a big day for Corduff a big day for the club, we were just taking it as another match” declared McEnaney.
“We feel we’re competitive in senior. We were competitive right through the league, we feel we can match teams” added the Banty.
While, Corduff were faced with the toughest opening game of all, the defending county champions, McEnaney were under no stress to admit.
“It was a huge task for Corduff, the senior champions albeit missing Dessie Ward and Eoin McKearney, their captain and go to man”.
“We felt we had a chance. Albeit a 50/50 chance, but it was a massive performance by the lads and we could have snuck it in the end”.
“We went down twice in the second-half and showed great character. In fairness to these lads there’s massive character in this group. We dug out wins last year in finals, in the 74th, 75th medal”.
“We knew we could do, I’m just delighted the lads showed they could do it”.
Corduff were drawn in group one with Ballybay, Latton, Aughnamullen and Truagh. Latton opened their campaign with a one point win over Aughnamullen 11 points to 1-7.
“I’m happy with the point” explained McEnaney on the draw with Ballybay. “I think that’ll be a very important point come the end of the championship. It doesn’t matter which group you’re in, it’s tough”.
Corduff are back in action Sunday when they travel to Truagh with throw-in set for 2pm.
