Cavan made a disappointing start to the All-Ireland series going down 0-20 to 1-8 to Mayo at Castlebar.
Mayo dominated the contest overall. The hosts finished with nine points to spare having led from the outset.
Mayo laid down an early marker having opened up a five-point lead inside 14 minutes.
Darren McHale, Matthew Ruane, Eoghan McLaughlin, Cillian O’Connor and Ryan O’Donoghue registered a point each for the hosts.
Cavan eventually got off the mark. Oisin Brady slotted over a free making it a four-point game.
Mayo restored their six-point cushion on two further occasions, each time Cavan responded with a point.
Jack Carney pushed the hosts six points clear again on 35 minutes. Subsequent scores from Ciaran Brady and Oisin Brady saw Cavan make it a four-point game at the break, nine points to five.
Tiarnan Madden and Cillian O’Connor traded scores after the restart before Mayo’s Stephen Coen made it a six-point game on 45 minutes.
Cavan spurned a goal chance four minutes later. Luke Fortune punched the ball wide after Cormac O’Reilly’s shot dropped short.
Mayo’s Conor Loftus opened up an eight-point lead on 51 minutes. Oisin Brady replied two minutes later with Cavan’s first score in 14 minutes.
Darren McHale gave Mayo a nine-point cushion on 56 minutes. Three minutes later, Cavan reduced the deficit to six points.
The Breffni side gave themselves a small life-line on the hour mark with a goal. James Smith fired home the rebound after Conor Brady’s shot was initially blocked. Cavan still trailed 0-16 to 1-7.
Mayo responded impressively however. The hosts replied with four of the last five scores including two from Ryan O'Donoghue as Mayo ran out nine point winners.
Cavan are next in action against Dublin in Kingspan Breffni on June first or second.
