In Soccer news, A local soccer chairperson has been critical of the FAI’s decision to introduce summer soccer to all underage leagues across the country by 2028.
Chairperson of Leitrim club Abbey Rovers Michael McTague does not feel the decision was made with consideration for clubs like his.
Abbey Rovers is a regional juvenile soccer club based in Ballinamore with 23 teams. It caters for players aged from 6 to 16. The club consists of around 300 participants and 43 coaches. The club has participants from Swanlinbar.
Many of the players and all of the coaches are also involved in GAA.
Michael McTague feels summer soccer will be a challenge to the future of the club and it’s a move that won’t work for many rural clubs.
