Iconic GAA broadcaster Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh has paid tribute on Sunday Sport on Shannonside Northern Sound FM to legendary Leitrim footballer Packie McGarty saying “he’ll be spoken about for a long time yet”
Packie McGarty passed away in Dublin this week. McGarty made his senior debut for Leitrim while still a teenager in 1949 at the age of sixteen and went on to play county football for a total of 22 years until his retirement in 1971.
Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh described Packie as a “noted Leitrim footballer that was known all over Ireland and deeply respected”
The Kerryman compared him to Christy ring in the ability to draw crowds to matches and how Packie “never let his side down and he wasn’t a mighty big man but he wasn’t small either. He was big-hearted with great skill”
“He was a quiet man that didn’t seek publicity and just wanted to play football”
He signed off his tribute by saying “Tá sé imithe ar shlí na fírinne”
