Leona Maguire heads into the Olympics on a positive note

Cavan’s Leona Maguire shot a superb closing round of 61 at the Amundi Evian Championship in France, equalling the lowest round in major history when she finished tied for sixth.

Maguire carded 10 birdies, including four on the trot between the 15th and 18th to match the record set by South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim at the same course seven years ago.

A remarkable final round of 10 birdies including four on the trot saw her climb 26 places in the leaderboard putting her on 13 under par and five shots behind joint-leaders Min Jee Lee and Jeon-Geun Lee.

Maguire will now represent Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics with the women's individual stroke play tournament scheduled to tee off on Wednesday August fourth at Kasumigaseki Country Club.

Stephanie Meadow will also line out for team Ireland as she finished a further eight strokes behind her on five under par. The competition was won by Min Jee Lee as she edged Jeon-Geun Lee in the play-offs to claim a maiden major title.
