Monaghan retained their Allianz League division one status for 2022 with a dramatic last gasp victory over Galway after extra-time.
Jack McCarron’s point right at the death after three minutes of injury time in Extra-time sealed it for Monaghan who will stay in the top flight for an eighth successive season; Galway have been relegated.
In a dramatic match were Galway had edged proceedings Paul Kelly’s 17th minute goal saw Galway lead 1-3 to four points at the first water break.
Monaghan found points in the second quarter from Karl O’Connell, Jack McCarron (3) and Conor McManus to tie up the scoring before Robert Finnerty’s goal bang on half-time left it 2-6 to nine points at the break.
Darren Hughes and Dessie Ward both received black cards as Galway kept three between the sides at the second water break 2-10 to 13 points.
It looked to be Galway’s day thanks to points from Robert Finnerty and Shane Walsh, Dessie Ward’s point in the 69th minute didn’t look like it was enough.
Ward added a point two minutes into injury time with Darren Hughes driving the ball home to the net a minute later to tie the game up.
Galway edged back in front thanks to Matthew Tierney 45 but Conor McManus sent the game to extra-time 1-16 to 2-13.
Galway led by a point at half-time in extra-time thanks to scores from Johnny Duane, Robert Finnerty and Shane Walsh. Shane Carey and a Jack McCarron free had left one point in it.
Jack McCarron levelled the game again with a free five minutes into the second-half of extra-time with Kieran Duffy putting Monaghan ahead 2-16 to 1-20.
Matthew Tierney equalised for Galway with a mark a minute into injury time, but up stepped man of the match McCarron to win it for Monaghan with the last kick of the game, 1-21 to 2-17 and keep Monaghan in division one for 2022!
