Kellie Harrington has become the first Irish woman to defend her Olympic title.
The Dubliner has won back-to-back gold medals after beating China’s Wenlu Yang on a split decision in 60kg final at Roland Garros.
Indeed, Harrington joins Pat O’Callaghan, Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy as the only Irish athletes to retain an Olympic title.
She got off to a flying start winning the first round 4-1. After the second round she was still ahead on three of the judges’ scorecards, level on the other two.
Yang won the third round 4-1 but crucially Harrington still won the contest 4-1 overall.
Celebratory scenes followed at Roland Garros as she became the only Irish boxer to ever retain an Olympic title.
