20 Clubs needed with launch set for August 2026

The FAI have announced a new national league of 20 clubs to sit below the League of Ireland.

20 teams are required to partake in a north/south, national league, which will be begin in August 2026.

The FAI were previously working on a League of Ireland division two concept. However, the new FAI national league will take its place with expressions of interested now requested. Indeed, tromotion and relegation to the league of Ireland first division is included.

How It Works

The FAI is set to launch the League in preparation for a shorter season in 2026; for alignment with the 2027 League of Ireland calendar.

Clubs must express their interest by the 21st February 2025 to be considered for the League.

Indeed, 20 teams are required for two divisions, North and South, in one National League. Whereas, the new league will include promotion to the League of Ireland First Division.

"This is the first stage of the creation of a new FAI National League and is an exciting moment for Irish football as we progress another of our 11 key actions aligned with our Football Pathways Plan” said FAI chief football officer Marc Canham.

“The new FAI National League provides a clear pathway and progression from the Amateur game to the League of Ireland and we look forward to working with all stakeholders to develop our Irish football pyramid now and in the future."
