McEvoy Supervalu East Cavan Eagles got life in the National basketball league underway with a winning start as they scored a 84 points to 72 victory over SETU Carlow.
The Eagles led 74-67 at half-time, holding off a Carlow rally in the third-quarter. Carlow brought the game back to 79-71 before Cavan won out 84-72 in the Virginia show centre.
Elsewhere, in MissQuote.ie Division 1, Oblate Dynamos national league debut ended in defeat. They were edged out 53-50 by Swords Thunder at home in Oblate Hall.
Griffith College Templeogue beat Moy Tolka Rovers 51-48 in another all-Dublin affair. The other new women’s national league club, St. Paul’s Killarney, powered to a 82-42 win at Marble City Hawks.
Yuleska Ramirez Tejeda and Sofia Paska finished with 35 and 23 points respectively for the victors.
Portlaoise Panthers were also road winners, 60-45, at Marble City Hawks, while Limerick Celtics got the better of Phoenix Rockets 90-78.
