James McCartan has stepped down as manager of the Down senior footballers. The two-time All-Ireland-winning player took charge for the second time ahead of the 2022 season. But Down suffered relegation to Division Three, while they made early exits in the Ulster Championship to Monaghan and the Tailteann Cup to Cavan. In his previous stint at the helm, McCartan guided his native county to the All-Ireland final of 2010.
The appointment of Jason Sherlock as Monaghan manager looks a lot closer with it believed that his former team mate Kevin Nolan will be part of his management team. Kevin transferred to the Cremartin club a number of years ago and would have a good knowledge of the club scene as well as been involved in development squads.
