Donaghmoyne were crowned Monaghan intermediate football champions following a 2-11 to 2-8 victory over Aughnamullen in the county final at Iniskeen.
The first half was evenly contested with the sides deadlocked at 1-4 to 0-7 before a superior second half performance saw Donaghmoyne emerge victorious.
Aughnamullen made the brighter start and led 1-2 to 0-2 at the first water break with Colin Clerkin’s goal on 13 minutes separating the teams.
Donaghmoyne rallied after the restart and restored parity on 25 minutes. The sides subsequently traded a point each resulting in a level scoreboard at half-time.
Joel Wilson found the net for Aughnamullen ten minutes into the second half but their two-point lead lasted just 60 seconds as Liam McDonald replied with a quickfire goal for Donaghmoyne.
Donaghmoyne subsequently stretched the margin to four points at the three-quarter mark thanks to a penalty goal by Liam McDonald on 47 minutes.
Seven minutes later, Aughnamullen were awarded a penalty but Micheal Bannigan’s effort was repelled by Shane Garland. Aughnamullen were now three points down with six minutes remaining.
The sides traded two points each thereafter as Donaghmoyne finished with three points to spare and can now look forward to senior football in 2022.
