Local Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan and North Meath, Niamh Smyth has expressed her disappointment at the unresolved fixture clash facing seven dual players who are representing Cavan in this weekend’s league semi- final clashes in camogie and football. The stalemate arises from the footballers playing Meath in Kingspan Breffni at 1.00pm and the camogie players taking on Mayo in Markievicz Park at 3.00pm this coming Saturday.
Deputy Smyth stated,
Surely, after the past 16 months of lockdowns and restrictions an accommodation between the two associations can be reached to allow the seven players, play in both matches with a suitable time frame between both fixtures. The welfare of the seven players involved is paramount as well as the morale and team spirit within both panels. The ladies should not be put in the unenviable position of having to make a choice between games that they simply love to play and compete in."
Deputy Smith concluded by asking
for common sense to prevail to ensure an appropriate solution is found that puts the best interests of the seven players and their teammates at the heart of the impasse.
