Clontribret opened their Greenfield foods Monaghan senior football championship campaign with a 2-13 to 1-7 victory over Magheracloone on home soil.
Clontibret led 0-7 to 0-1 on 14 minutes. Conor McManus (three), Darragh Hughes, Ryan McGuigan, Francis Hughes and Dessie Mone on target for the hosts.
Magheracloone’s Pete Ward brought it back to a five point game on 27 minutes. Ryan McGuigan’s goal on the stroke of half-time saw Clontibret lead 1-9 to 0-3.
The visitors started the second half impressively. Farrelly’s goal six minutes into the second half reduced the margin to six points.
Seven minutes later, Clontibret moved ten points clear when Brian Greenan found the net and the hosts held on for a nine-point victory in the end.
Inniskeen tasted victory in the other group two fixture after beating Scotstown 1-11 to 0-12 on home soil.
