Cavan are out of the Ulster senior football championship following an eight-point defeat to Tyrone at O’Neill’s Healy Park in Omagh today.
Tyrone led 11 points to seven at half-time before a strong second half saw the hosts cruise to victory.
The opening quarter was evenly contested with the sides deadlocked at five points each as Gearoid McKiernan (two),Gerard Smith, Thomas Galligan, and Oisin Pierson were on target Cavan.
Two points from McKiernan kept the scoreboard level until the 27th minute before Tyrone enjoyed a four-point cushion at the break after hitting as many points without reply.
Tyrone began the second-half in explosive fashion and a goal from substitute Brian Kennedy doubled the margin in the 40th minute. The teams subsequently cancelled each other out during the remainder of the third quarter as Tyrone held an eight point cushion at the second water break.
Cavan were handed a minor lifeline when Ronan McNamee received a straight red card in the 56th minute but the Ulster champions still trailed by seven points.
The same margin separated the teams in the 69th minute after Gearoid McKiernan and Conor Smith added a point each for Cavan while Niall Sludden and Darren McCurry did likewise for Tyrone.
Cathal McShane subsequently came off the bench and slotted over two points for Tyrone sealing an eight-point win for Tyrone as Cavan’s Ulster title is over.
