Cavan have been relegated to division four following an unexpected defeat to Wicklow in the Allianz Football League relegation play-off at Pairc Tailteann in Navan.
Wicklow recorded a 3-11 to 18 point victory having led 1-5 to 0-7 at half-time.
Wicklow made the brighter start hitting three points inside the first six minutes before Cavan fought back to led four points to three at the first water break.
Conor Madden, Patrick Lynch, Gearoid McKiernan and Conor Brady registered a score each in the opening quarter.
Wicklow were back in front in the 28th minute when Patrick O’Connor found the net giving them a two-point cushion.
Gearoid McKiernan responded with a point for Cavan and a one point margin separated the sides at half-time.
Seanie Furlong scored Wicklow’s second goal of the game four minutes after the restart as Davy Burke’s men restored a two-point cushion.
Ten minutes later, Wicklow were awarded a penalty and Seanie Furlong doubled the margin as he bagged his second goal of the match.
Patrick Lynch replied with a point for Cavan as Mickey Graham’s men trailed 3-7 to 11 points at the second water break.
Cavan raised their game in the final quarter and a 69th minute point from Gearoid McKiernan made it a three-point game.
Five minutes of additional time were awarded and Cavan kept the scoreboard ticking over but couldn’t find a crucial goal as Wicklow ran out two-point winners.
The Breffni men now drop down to the bottom tier after a disappointing defeat.
