Cavan’s Allianz football league division four campaign got off to decent start following a 0-12 to 0-8 victory over Leitrim at Pairc Sean MacDiarmada.
The visitors led 0-6 to 0-5 at the half-time break and a superior second half saw them finish with four points to spare.
Two points from Keith Beirne saw Leitrim lead 0-2 to no score on six minutes but Cavan rallied to move one point clear 13 minutes later.
The sides cancelled each other out during the remainder of the half; Darragh Rooney (two) and Keith Beirne were on target for Leitrim while Raymond Galligan added three points for Cavan.
A David McGovern point restored parity seven minutes into the second half but Leitrim would fail to score for another 23 minutes.
Cavan capitalised on the scoring drought and moved four points clear heading into injury time; Raymond Galligan, Conor Smith, Cormac O’Reilly and Paddy Lynch were all on target.
Keith Beirne and Paddy Lynch traded a point each in injury time as Cavan ran out four point winners. Mickey Graham’s men can now look forward to home tie with Wexford next week.
