Cavan opened their Allianz football league division three campaign with a 0-12 to 1-6 victory over Westmeath at TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar.
The Breffni men were six points clear midway through the second half but held on for a three-point victory in the end.
The sides cancelled each other out during the opening 20 minutes before points from Dara McVeety, Ryan O’Neill pushed Cavan two points clear nine minutes later.
The teams subsequently traded a point each as Mickey Graham’s men held on to lead by two points at half-time; 0-5 to 0-3.
Cavan began the second half with four successive scores before a goal from Westmeath’s Ronan Wallace reduced Cavan’s lead to three points on 50 minutes.
Wallace subsequently made it a one-point game eight minutes from time before Cavan landed three of the next four scores to claim victory.
