Cavan have reached the Allianz football league division four final following a 3-21 to 0-10 victory over Waterford at Kingspan Breffni.
Mickey Graham’s men led 1-10 to 0-4 at the half-time break before a dominant second-half display resulted in a convincing 20-point win.
The sides traded two points each in the opening nine minutes but Cavan opened up a nine-point gap on 21 minutes after scoring 1-5 on the trot.
Raymond Galligan chipped in with three points with Paddy Lynch and Gerry Smyth also on target while Thomas Galligan found the net on 17 minutes.
Tom O’Connell ended Waterford’s scoring drought by slotting over his third point of the night on 22 minutes before Jason Curry made it a six-point game three minutes later.
Cavan responded impressively and points from Paddy Lynch, James Smith and Raymond Galligan gave the hosts a nine-point buffer at the break.
The Breffni men began the second half with urgency hitting three points inside the opening five minutes before Jason Curry brought it back to a nine-point game on 44 minutes.
Waterford endured another barren spell and failed to score for 22 minutes while Cavan capitalised by hitting 1-7 during the same period; substitute Caoimhin O’Reilly adding a second goal with two minutes remaining.
Jason Curry ended Waterford’s scoring drought two minutes into injury time before a last-gasp goal from Gearoid McKiernan sealed a convincing victory for Cavan.
Mickey Graham’s side are now promoted to the third tier and are assured of a place in the division four final next week regardless of results elsewhere.
