Cavan claimed the bragging rights in the Northern Sound derby beating Monaghan 2-16 to 0-19 in the Lory Meagher cup at Kingspan Breffni.
The first half was a tight affair. Canice Maher’s point on the stroke of half-time saw Cavan lead 0-11 to 0-10.
Thomas Hughes restored parity within a minute of the restart. 60 second later Cavan’s Diarmuid Carney registered the game’s first goal.
Sean Keating added another goal on 57 minutes as Cavan moved six points clear. Monaghan subsequently made it a five-point game heading into injury time.
Niall Arthur registered two stoppage-time points for the Farney men but it wasn’t enough as the Breffni men claimed a narrow victory.
