The Garda bank holiday roads policing operation is now in full swing.
It began yesterday and will run until 7am on Tuesday. So far, 143 people have died in crashes, and bank holidays tend to be the most dangerous time to use the roads.
Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern who is the head of the Cavan/Monaghan/Louth garda division says there has been an increase on drug use when taking to the roads along with alcohol consumption.
He says speed in the region is playing a major part when it comes to leaving our road network unsafe, ahead of the bank holiday weekend. Ronan Gargan has been speaking to Mr McGovern about road safety ahead of the weekend.
