A local councillor is seeking clarity surrounding the sale of vapes to under 18s.
Cllr Brendan Fay brought a motion to this week's sitting of Cavan County Council calling on the local authority to to make contact with the Justice Minister and the Garda Commissioner on the issue.
He said he believes enforcement is lacking when it comes to the legislation that was enacted last year which bans the sale of vapes to under 18s.
New legislation for the Nicotine Inhaling Products Bill which is being drafted at present proposes to ban the sale, manufacture or import of single-use or disposable vapes in Ireland.
The new legislation also limits vape flavours to tobacco, with provisions for the list of allowed flavours to be amended pending new evidence. The Belturbet Councillor says these flavors are aimed at younger people adding that he strongly believes that vapes act as a gateway to harder drugs. Cllr Fay has been speaking to Ronan Gargan who says it's evident that kids are still able to purchase vapes locally and something needs to be done and done now.
