It’s emerged that so-called ‘zombie spiders’ have been discovered in a cave on the Cavan-Fermanagh border.
The discovery was made by speleologist and cave explorer, Tim Fogg. Indeed, at The White Fathers cave, west of Blacklion in Co Cavan.
The fungus forces spiders to come out of the crevices in the walls and it then kills them, spreads its spores and infects more spiders. While fungi have no nervous system or brain, it can manipulate the behaviour of the spiders with chemicals. Jodie Curran spoke with Tim Fogg about the discovery.
