The chairperson of the Cavan Disability Network made a presentation to Cavan County Council this week. The invitation to address councillors followed an earlier discussion about the need for more accessible parking spaces in the county.
Some 650,000 people - or 13 per cent of the population in Ireland - are living with a disability. People with disabilities make up the largest minority on the globe. And, in Cavan the last census showed that 16,300 people reported experiencing at least one long-lasting condition to some extent.
Disability Network chairperson Bridget Boyle, is a long-term wheelchair-user and is well-placed to advise on all matters of accessibility in County Cavan. She told Zoe Tunney, there have been great improvements in later years but more work could be done:
