As from today, anyone in Monaghan who needs an ambulance may be taken to Monaghan Hospital for treatment instead of facing a long journey and waiting times at one of the larger hospitals.
The National Ambulance Service and Monaghan Hospital have agreed a system wherby under a strict set of protocols anyone in Monaghan who requires an ambulance will now be assessed by paramedics and, if appropriate, be taken to their local hospital to be seen.
This emergency service will operate for extended hours from 8am until 8pm and will operate seven days a week.
Senator Robbie Gallagher observed the scheme being run successfully in Roscommon and called on the Health Minister to introduce the same scheme here.
