The conversation around the safety of women in society was reignited last week following the disappearance and death of 33 year old Sarah Everard in the UK.

A woman living in the Shannonside Northern Sound region who survived a violent attack on her way to work almost five years ago believes everyone has a role to play in reducing violence against women.

Ruth Maxwell, suffered serious hand injuries when she fought off a man who attacked her with a knife in 2016.

Research from Transport Infrastructure Ireland published this week shows more than half of women won't use trains or buses after dark over safety concerns.

One in three public transport users has seen someone being harassed while on-board services.

Ruth believes that experts from a wide variety of disciplines such as Gardai, domestic violence services and education need to come together to begin work on a strategy to change society's views on women and what is acceptable behaviour.
