Seanán Ó Coistín contacted the JF Show regarding a letter that he found in a book that he recently bought from John's Bookshop in Athlone.
He opened the book and flicked through it and found the letter tucked into the book. It is a short letter from a woman called Joan to a man called Harry.
The text of the letter is:
"Dear Harry, I should have let you know before this, that I am not going to Dublin to-morrow, so I will be able to go to the dance to-night. So if you like to call about 11o'c I will be ready. I went down this after-noon but Kitty was out, & I think you said you were going to Roscommon to-day, so I did not ask for you. If 11o'c does not suit you, will you let me know? I am sure it is going to be a good hop" & I am looking forward to it ever so much. If you have time before the dance come up & see me, Joan."
Seanán believes that Joan was a girl in her late teens or a woman in her early twenties.
The letter doesn't have a date on it but it is reckoned it is from the early 1930s.
We are now hoping to find out if anyone knows of a Harry and Joan from the Athlone/Roscommon area who lived there in the 1930s.
Did Harry ever take up Joan's invitation to go to the dance with her.
