35 children and one elderly woman died after a blaze engulfed an orphanage in Cavan town on the 23rd of February 1943.
A campaign to erect a permanent memorial to the victims is now underway and over one thousand people have already signed an online petition.
94 year old Patrick Doyle was a 19 year old solider stationed in Cavan Barracks when he and others got the call to attend the scene.
