Jim Power is the consulting economist with Champion Green, and in a new report for Champion Green, he says there is a strong sense that this cost-of-living squeeze is an Irish phenomenon alone.
However, he says practically every country in the developed world is grappling with the highest rates of inflation in decades.
Jim Power warns that this perception could push consumers mistakenly towards online retail abroad, or to cross-border shopping, and away from local.
He says it's vital this misperception is recognised and addressed as jobs and prosperity relies more than ever on local spending.
