Young people in the region with 'good potential' are falling victim to drugs dealers.
That's the opinion of local TD Brendan Smith who was reacting to the rise in drug crime figures at the recent meeting of the Cavan Joint Policing Committee.
Searches under the Drugs Act in the county rose from 689 to 855 over the past year, while possession for sale or supply rose from 33 to 68.
There were also over €540,000 worth of drugs seized in Cavan over the last year.
Deputy Smith says those supplying these drugs need to face harsher penalties, with a multi-faceted approach needed when it comes to offering support to addicts including increased funding.
