Yesterday was 'World Right To Die Day' which seeks to focus attention on the plight of terminally ill people who want to end their own lives. Irish Doctors supporting medical assistance in dying, submitted a petition signed by more than 5,000 people.
They want a committee to examine the issue in greater detail, as promised by the Justice Committee last year. Among them was GP Dr Brendan O'Shea, who insists Irish people should have a choice.
"We want the issue to be examined and we would like Irish people to have this choice at end of life. That's why we are here. It's a very ethically sensitive issue. And it's an important issues.
"But it is important to note that in Ireland, as an affluent society, we are falling increasingly behind the conversation. Last week Tasmania approved it, so we need to move on and have the Committee," he added.
