Professor James Hayes has encouraged those living with COPD to avail of local supports.

Today marks World COPD day. It aims to raise awareness, share knowledge and discuss ways to reduce the burden of COPD worldwide. COPD is a common, preventable and treatable disease that is characterised by ongoing breathing difficulties, usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles or gases. Major risk factors for developing COPD are tobacco smoking or exposure to occupational, outdoor and indoor air pollution.

Professor James Hayes is consultant respiratory physician at Cavan General Hospital. Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Professor Hayes highlighted that a cough and shortness of breath are often the two main symptoms of COPD. Despite this he has encouraged people to avail of the supports out there as the disease can't be cured but can be treated.
