County Monaghan is set to host its first world class angling event next week at Lough Muckno.
The National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland has been awarded the honour of hosting the 6th edition of this event by the Fédéracion International de la Pêche Sportive.
The town of Castleblayney will welcome twenty-eight teams representing seventeen visiting nations to the area, providing a welcome boost to the local economy and angling tourism.
The National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland first hosted the European Championships on Lough Muckno in 1998.
Chair of Carrickmacross-Castleblayney Municipal District, Aidan Campbell says Monaghan County Council are delighted to support this international festival and to welcome visiting anglers and their support teams to this beautiful part of Ireland and particularly to the town of Castleblayney.
Teams will train on the venue from Monday 17th to Friday 21st of April 2023 ahead of the Parade of Nations on Thursday 20th of April where the Chair of Carrickmacross-Castleblayney Municipal District will ceremoniously receive the flags from the teams and the championships will be declared open by representatives of FIPSed Fédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive en Eau Douce.
The competition will be played out on Saturday & Sunday 22nd & 23rd of April from 10am to 3pm, finishing with a closing ceremony at the Íontas Arts, Theatre & Community Centre followed by a Gala Dinner at the Glencarn Hotel. Angling enthusiasts will be delighted with the opportunity to watch top anglers in action on the bank, such as England’s Steve Ringer and Hungary’s Tamas Walter and the current world club champions, JWP Waterservice from the Netherlands.
