Derrylea Bridge in Ballyjamesduff is to undergo a state of the art revamp this summer.
The bridge - a two-span masonry arch structure, which carries the R194 over the Claddagh River - received part 8 approval at a recent municipal district meeting
It is on a dangerous bend along the R194 road and has become "unfit for purpose" according to Cllr Trevor Smith.
He said that works will be carried out on both sides of the bridge between May and September to accommodate the realignment of the R194 and the widening of the structure on both sides using reinforced concrete arches.
Cllr Smith also added that traffic disruption in the area was likely as a result of the works.
"This is a big job because there is work to be carried out on both sides of this bridge," he continued.
"I would call for local contractors to be used.
"It is very important that the council, at all costs, ensure that local contractors carry out the work."
