Works on phase 2 of Ulster Canal restoration get off the ground

Works on phase 2 of the Ulster Canal restoration which will see the section of the canal between Clones and Clonfad restored, have begun. An investment of €20m has been provided for the restoration which is part of the Shared Island Programme.

Cavan Monaghan Fianna Fail TD, deputy Brendan Smith says the initiative proves the "importance" of cross-border projects in Ireland. He added with phase 1 of the Ulster Canal restoration now complete, the focus going forward will be on bringing communities together and providing valuable amenities to people across the region.

The local deputy highlighted how phase 2 works will include the link with Clones and Clonfad, the construction of a 42-berth marina at Clones, and new walking and cycling trails along the Canal.

"With phase 1 of the project already complete I'm delighted to see the focus and investment by Government to continue this cross border project which brings communities together and offers valuable amenities for the local regions," he added.

"The Irish Government's €20m investment in phase 2 will link Clones and Clonfad and see the construction of a 42-berth marina at Clones, with access bridges and amenity area, as well as new walking and cycling trails along the Canal."
