Work is continuing on the development of a masterplan for the Abbeylands area in Cavan town centre.
Councillors were given an update on the major project in recent days.
The County Council aims to identify and prioritise a scheme of works to redevelop and rejuvenate this historic area in the town centre.
It's hoped the area around the Abbey can be redeveloped and better incorporated into the town as a new civic space.
Councillors in the Cavan-Belturbet area expressed hopes the project can progress after previous plans over two decades ago never saw fruition.
However, they said the area needs to be treated with care and respect as the Abbeylands contains an historic graveyard.
An application for funding under the Rural Regeneration Fund was submitted in May.
