Work on Claragh Bridge has stopped pending conservation advice.
Works to implement greater safety features on the bridge near Cootehill were started on Monday, despite local residents stating they had no prior knowledge of the plans.
However, Cavan councillor Aidan Fitzpatrick made representations on behalf of a number of residents to the council following fears the 19th century metal rails on the bridge would be removed.
The council confirmed works will now cease on the bridge whilst they investigate the best solution in order to combine the conservation of the rails and the renovation project.
