The rights that women now have in Ireland were hard fought for.

This is according to Fiona McCaffrey Jones, a community activist in Monaghan, who spoke about the importance of International Women's Day on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show.

Fiona says that women still have a long way to go before they have equality.

And, she adds, it's important that women's inequality is kept on the agenda.

"When my grandparents married in 1923, there was divorce, access to contraception, and a woman could get a C-section," added Fiona.

"So what is happening since the 1990s is only really bringing back rights that were actually available 70 years prior.

"I'm proud to be a woman; I'm proud of women and women's achievements.

"Irish women have had great achievements - we have had to female presidents."
