Just 40.9% of farmers along the border region have a succession plan in place.
Only 13% of women are the registered owners of a farm.
These are just some of the latest CSO stats that emerged today.
Hannah Quinn-Mulligan, Chair of Women in Agriculture, says there are a lot of women "working behind the scenes" in the industry.
This is not reflected in the figures, she added, while speaking on this afternoon's Wider View.
Ms Quinn-Mulligan said the love for the land is very deep rooted in the Irish psyche.
Traditionally, she continued, it has been passed from father to son.
And while that is changing "gradually", the reality is that women have always been part of the family farm.
"If we think of the co-op industry, the dairy industry and its multi-billion euro figures, yet there are only 3% of board members on co-ops are women," Ms Quinn-Mulligan continued.
"It doesn't make sense; how did we go from women being the backbone of the Irish dairy industry to having virtually no women involved at all.
"Unfortunately that is something that does impact the border region."
