'To be involved in the ceremony is a very important for people, even if it's selecting the coffin... it's important for people to feel like they have options on what roles they carry out'

A Cavan undertaker has outlined his support for the participation of more female relatives and friends at funerals.

While traditionally, it is male family members who carry the coffin of the deceased on their last journey, undertaker Colm Kieran, who is based in Kingscourt says that female members also want to play their part and do the same.

According to Mr Kieran, he has witnessed a change in the roles which women want to play over the last ten years, and as a funeral director it's his role to present "all of the options" to families.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Colm who already has instilled a template to encourage the participation of women through his business, believes it's 'important' for both sexes to be involved in the ceremony.

He added that female family members and friends are "more than entitled" to carry the coffin of a loved one, and that it only takes the example of one person for others to see that it can be done:
